Scioto Country Club History

Scioto Country Club from its inception has always been an important part of the history of Upper Arlington and the city of Columbus.  Opening in 1916 as a centerpiece of Upper Arlington, the Club is the focal point of a community that is one of the finest in the country.  As James Hamill, one of the founding members stated at the Club’s opening, "Our Club, in time, will become one of the most important social centers of the community, and will constitute one of the show places of the city”.   Today it stands as a pillar of the Upper Arlington Community, an important gathering place for family and friends, and a treasured part of the history of central Ohio.  Over its 105 year history, Scioto has grown to include outstanding recreational facilities in addition to its warm clubhouse experience.   A Club that supports the community that surrounds it, Scioto is truly our members’ home away from home.

The Mission of the Club is embraced with every facet of the Club.

  • GOLF
    • Designed as the first 18-hole golf course in central Ohio by renowned Scottish-born architect Donald Ross, it later became the Club where golf’s greatest player, Jack Nicklaus, learned the game.   With the opening of the golf course in 1916, the Club quickly gained national stature as a pre-eminent facility and a decade later hosted the 1926 U.S. Open Championship won by golfing legend Bobby Jones.  This started the rich tournament tradition that Scioto enjoys as one of only five golf courses in the United States to have hosted five different major championships.  The 1931 Ryder Cup, the 1950 PGA Championship, the 1968 U.S. Amateur, and the 1986 Senior U.S. Open each added to the tournament legacy and prestige of the Club.  During its Centennial year in 2016, the Club again hosted the U.S. Senior Open marking its sixth major championship held at Scioto.  Scioto provided the connection between the two greatest names in golf in the 20th Century, that of Jones and Nicklaus.  The golf course has been acclaimed around the world as a strategic routing and a course that demands precise shot-making.  In its history, the Club boasts four golf professionals (Club professionals George Sargent, Jack Grout, and Walker Inman, Jr. and legendary Jack Nicklaus) that are in the PGA Hall of Fame.  Top amateur players, both male and female, honed their skills under the tutelage of these great professionals. The golf course, recently renovated in 2021 by Andrew Green, used the 1926 "Dodo Bird" drawing to restore the original Donald Ross course that hosted the 1926 National Open and the 1931 Ryder Cup.  Fairway widths were widened to original size, Ross designed features such as hummocks and flat bottom bunkers were again restored to showcase the original design while built for the modern player.  Features that were removed in previous renovations, were restored and the greens were rebuilt in the style that represented the era when the course first opened over 100 years ago.  Today, the course provides a great test to the finest players in the world, ready to host major championships, and yet is one that is most enjoyable for all levels of players.  The practice facility features generous tee grounds and multiple short-game areas and incorporates an indoor facility and teaching center for year around practice, club fitting, and lesson programs.

  • THE CLUBHOUSE – AN EXTENSION OF THE MEMBER’S HOME
    • The Clubhouse boasts nearly 80,000 sq. ft. of space recently renovated to provide the membership with an extension of their homes.  With the views from the Clubhouse extending over the golf course to the original homes of Upper Arlington, the Clubhouse was designed to offer members comfortable spaces with which to dine, visit with fellow members and family, and locker facilities for the athletic areas of the Club.  Wonderful dining venues for families or member functions, outdoor porches and bars, fire pits, and magnificent views overlooking the golf course allow the membership ample opportunities to enjoy the Club’s fine cuisine.  Whether an intimate dinner with friends and family or a special occasion event, the Club’s facilities range from very casual dining in the Donald Ross Room and adjacent 1916 Grille, to the Terraces overlooking the first fairway, or the beautiful private dining facilities.  These private dining rooms can accommodate member groups from 15 – 300 people, from small business gatherings to lavish galas and weddings.  Separate men’s and women’s spaces in their respective locker rooms allow members the private club ambiance for card playing, enjoy conversation with their friends, or to just relax.

  • THE FAMILY CLUB – SOCIAL AND ATHLETIC
    • Scioto Country Club is more than a destination for relaxation, golf and dining venues.  This is a family country club that incorporates all ages into the fabric of the Club.   From junior athletic programs to family dining to the many family events that are on the social calendar in a given year, the Club embraces family life and creates memories that are cherished long after the Club event is held.  The Club has long given children the opportunity to excel at golf, tennis, and swimming, and has had numerous state and national champions in its ranks.  The social calendar has over 70 events including the traditional holiday events, dances, special brunches, wine dinners, speaker series, bridge and member functions.

The Club recently added a Family Center which incorporates over 4,000 sq. ft. of space designed for family use with golf simulators, ping-pong tables, billiards, arcade games, and multiple gaming tables.

  • AQUATICS & RACQUET SPORTS
    • The Club boasts outstanding programs in aquatics, tennis, platform tennis, and pickleball.  As the Club continued its growth in the early years, it welcomed swimming in 1937 with the building of its first pool.   The pool was acclaimed as one of the finest facilities in the country and was under the direction of Mike Peppe who was also the Ohio State coach and U.S. Olympic Diving coach.  Peppe brought his greatest stars to Scioto for summer workouts, or swimming and diving exhibitions.  Today, the aquatics facility has four pools and has enclosed the competition lap pool for year-around swimming.  As one of the few facilities in Central Ohio that still have a three-meter diving board, the Club continues its great tradition of swimming and diving excellence with programs for all levels of participants, including learn to swim programs, children’s swim and dive teams in the summer as well as a winter swim program.  The Tennis program restarted at the Club in the early 1960’s.  Today, the Club has nine Har-Tru Courts, two hard courts, and two pickleball courts with programming for players of all levels.  The tennis program features many social and competitive functions on its yearly calendar, with weekly clinics, USTA and GCTA team play, men's and women's play nights, mixed-couples events, as well as junior clinics and events.  Platform tennis, a sport mostly played in the winter, came onto the scene in 1976.  The Club's new premier facility, completed in December 2019, has four-heated, elevated courts, complete with LED Lights that allow play even in the coldest conditions.  A four-player game, platform tennis is a fun and challenging activity for individuals and families looking for outside exercise in the winter months.  After play, Members can retire to the warmth of our State-of-the-Art warming hut, complete with full bar, fireplace, flat screen TV's, tables and wrap around window seating.  The Club also has been the host site for the Columbus Open.  Pickleball started at Scioto in 2017.  Played mostly in the summer months, the sport is one of the fastest growing in the country.  Played with a paddle and a perforated plastic ball on Scioto's two brand new pickleball courts.  The Club also has four additional pickleball court lines painted on the hard tennis courts.  Pickleball is a very fast paced game using elements of badminton, tennis and table tennis.  It is a paddle sport for all ages and skill levels.  The Club will have an indoor tennis facility in Fall of 2022, enclosing two tennis courts and four pickleball courts.

  • THE MEMBER’S WELL-BEING – FITNESS
    • The Club introduced fitness in 1998 with the building of the 10,000 sq. ft. facility that also shared a lower level with tennis.  In December 2019, Scioto completed the construction of the new health and wellness facility.  With over 13,500 sq. ft., this two-story facility incorporates complete well-being for our Members.  Three dedicated group fitness rooms, Rogue fitness equipment, Life-Fitness cardio machines, Pilates reformers, as well as luxurious locker rooms complete with Steam and Sauna amenities.  The Grab and Go Market provides healthy food and drink options for Members to re-fuel before, during or after workouts and spa treatments.  Our staff of certified personal trainers will help Members reach their personal fitness goals.  The fitness program includes group exercises and wellness activities to keep the membership healthy and fit.  Massage Therapy is available as well and many fitness programs are designed for all levels and ages of the membership.  Coupled with the indoor pool facility, the fitness programs can also include water programs as well.
